Artiste line up for LaBa! Arts Festival revealed

Artiste line up for LaBa! Arts Festival revealed

By Our Reporter

The LaBa! Arts Festival is back.

Now in its 11th edition, the oldest street art festival in Uganda that focuses on sharing art in hybrid places will be held on Saturday, 27th May on Bukoto Street, Kamwokya under the theme “Ubuntu”, a word in Shona which means humanity or community spirit.

The visual arts will be at the core of the festival, representing eleven collective installations out of which the audience will vote for their favourite. The LaBa Audience Award will allow a member of the winning collective to travel to Chale Wote Street Art Festival in Accra in August 2017 with the Moving Africa programme by Goethe-Institut.

With many interactive and participatory projects, the festival as a daytime event addresses a large audience, including families with children. They will be able to explore art installations such as: a multimedia video and photo installation by Darleyne Komukama & Nikissi Serumaga-Jamo, a Collaborative Mural by Neema Iyer, an interactive photo studio, and a Farming Installation among others.

Other art forms including musical performance and dance will be secondary focuses of the day, hence performances of Spotlight Crew and poetry projects such as Tantoma and Kitara Nation Poets, as well as an acoustic showcase with Afrie, Wake and bands like Bantu Clan and Isiaha’s Destiny.

Kampala Music School, Mame N’Diack and the HeartBeatZone Drum Circle will involve the audience in interactive musical encounters; whereas Batalo East will hold their monthly Equation Dance Workshop on the LaBa! festival ground and open it for the public.

LaBa! is organized by Goethe-Zentrum Kampala/ Ugandan German Cultural Society in collaboration with a diverse artist-led committee that selects the pieces to showcase every year.

Apio Moro: Uganda’s Adele who sings in Japadhola

By Ian Ortega

If there’s one musician to watch in 2017, it must be Apio Moro. The moment I listened to her “Ajok” song, I sprang out of bed shouting; “Eureka”. This was it for me. Every year must come with someone to watch out for. 2017 had gone long without producing that one star. But just at that point of giving up, there came Apio Moro, and to make matters even more spectacular, she sings in Jopadhola, which could be the best language in the world. Jopadhola is like a combination of Spanish, French, Rutooro and Zulu. That’s how enticing this language is.

Apio Moro came to the world of many at the last Blankets and Wine. She’s also a regular at the Ugandan millennials’ must-attend event for Friday, Coutinho Kemiyondo’s Aka Dope. But who is Apio Moro? Some have called her Uganda’s Adele but that’s certainly an underestimation of her qualities. Should we say, she is a mélange of Adele, Nigeria’s Efya and South Africa’s Zonke.

Her music is Afro-Soul or Neo-soul but it’s the way she effortlessly sings that shows the natural star she is. She’s like a living Mozart, but for music. She’s almost made Japadhola a must learn language for many. She’s taken up the space that Keko left.

She doesn’t just promise to take you on an emotional musical roller coaster, she will carry you there and land you safely, quenching all your doubts and leaving you in total satisfaction wishing she never stops singing. She’s a writer, guitarist. And she does all this so-well. Not to sound narci-tribalistic, but it seems Japadhola are the trend, if not the disruption in this country.

Want to know how the great rock sings? Then listen to the girl from the land of the great rock. Like Moses, she strikes the rock and out comes the waters of music that pass life to their recipients.

Born Apio Lilian Samantha, the girl who grew up in Jinja is now the goddess of Ugandan music. Moro in “Luo” means “some” yet in contrast, Moro just doesn’t give us some, she gives us the full package. She’s revolutionary, choosing to sing in her mother tongue and combining it with English.

For long, I searched for a female version of Ian Ortega, Moro is that person. If I had not been a Priest, I would have proposed to her, just to listen to her sing, and nothing beyond. For her singing is food enough.

Of all her songs, I am mostly in love with ‘Ajok’ which means; “I am Fed Up.” We were fed up of Ugandan artistes doing the same thing. Here comes Moro doing it her own way, and weaving it so artfully the way a spider makes its web. She has other songs such as Obia, Two Twilo, Kiisa, Slave and Atiya.

As the year comes to a close, Apio Moro will lock it with a bang as she gifts us with her 13 track album. For those of us with great taste, this will be a must-attend event and above all, a must-buy. So if you want to know what great sounds like, Moro is the frequency to tune to. But be warned, you will be addicted. And you will become a Japadhola in the process.

5 Scary Things That Happen To Your Manhood As You Grow Older

5 Scary Things That Happen To Your Manhood As You Grow Older

New revelations have been made about what happens to a man’s man-hood when he eventually begins to grow old and get feeble.

There are many things that happen to our bodies as we age. Our skin sags, hair turns grey, we lose the elasticity we once had and wrinkles start to form in places you didn’t know could wrinkle.

Ageing doesn’t care which part of they body it targets – it will affect every inch of you and yep, that means your private part area as well.

“S*xual function declines as we age, but there are ways to slow or even halt this process to ensure that you enjoy s*x into your advancing years,” s*xual health expert and co-owner of online s*x toy retailer jodivine.com Samantha Evans said.

Here are five things you can expect to happen to your man-hood as you age:

1. Your testosterone levels will drop

Samantha said as a man ages, his testosterone levels will drop and it will take him longer to get aroused.

“Erectile dysfunction (ED) is associated with the ageing process and many men notice their s*xual function may start to decline between 40-70 years,” Samantha said.

ED is very common among ageing men and one of the most common causes of it can be stress.

2. The colour of your man-hood will change

As we age, atherosclerosis – the hardening of our arteries – becomes more common. This reduces good blood flow to a man’s private part area and thus the tip of the man-hood becomes lighter in colour.

“The man-hood undergoes several physical changes as men get older,” Samantha said.

“Reduced blood flow to the p*nis can cause the head of the man-hood to lose its purplish colour and just like the hair on our head and under our armpits, pubic hair becomes thinner and more sparse.”

3. Your weight will alter the size of your man-hood

A study in the New England Journal of Medicine from March 2000 said between the ages of 25 and 44 both men and women put on an average of 3.4% and 5.2% of weight per year respectively.

This means if you are a 160lb man you can expect to put on 5lb annually and if you are a 160lb woman you could expect to put on 8lb annually.

Samantha explained, “As a man gains more weight around his middle he may notice that his man-hood appears to be shrinking, but this pre-pubic pad of fat only makes the p*nis appear shorter when the base of the shaft is, in fact, buried in the fat pad. Losing weight will reveal that the man-hood has not shrunk.”

4. There will be shrinkage

Nope, not just jumping-into-cold-water shrinkage, permanent shrinkage.

“As a man gets older, his p*nis may shrink in size as a result of the slow deposit of fatty plaques in tiny arteries in the p*nis which reduces blood flow,” Samantha said.

“Known as arteriosclerosis, this process also occurs in the blood vessels surrounding the heart. The build up of inelastic collagen (scar tissue) inside the stretchy fibrous sheath that surrounds the erection chambers can lead to smaller erections.”

5. Your man-hood will be less sensitive

Since your testosterone levels drop and testosterone helps to support nervous tissue this will lead to a decrease in sensitivity – making it more difficult to climax and a softer erection.

As Samantha explained, “As a man gets older he may notice that he has decreased sensitivity in his man-hood, making it harder to achieve an erection and have an climax. This doesn’t usually affect s*xual function or make s*x less pleasurable.”
