Kiev. Ukraine’s military intelligence agency claimed that about 30 North Korean soldiers were killed or seriously injured in a weekend battle with Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk border region. The agency named ‘GUR’ said in a post on ‘Telegram’ that North Korean soldiers were killed around three villages in Kursk. Kursk is the border area where Russia has been trying to expel the Ukrainian army which has been occupying it for the last four months. GUR said at least three North Korean soldiers went missing near another village in Kursk.
The Ukrainian claims have not been independently verified. This is the first news of the death of North Korean soldiers in the war that has been going on for almost three years. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov referred questions regarding the claims to the Russian Defense Ministry, but has not yet received a comment.
North Korea has sent about 10,000 troops to Russia to help in the war, according to the US Department of Defense and Ukrainian officials. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had pledged unwavering support to Russia for the war under a mutual defense agreement. Ukrainian officials said on November 5 that Ukrainian security forces had encountered North Korean troops recently deployed to help Russia for the first time.
