Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy has made a big announcement before Diwali on Sunday. Rangasamy’s government has decided to provide 10 kg rice and 2 kg sugar free to card holders through fair price shops ahead of Diwali.
Shops will be reopened
Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy said the decision to distribute free rice and sugar to all families covered under the public distribution system in the Union Territory before Diwali has been taken keeping in mind the pleas received from various quarters. Ration shops, which have been closed for the last few months, will be reopened to distribute rice and sugar.
Government finalized the contract
The CM said that employees working in fair price shops, who have not received salaries for several months, will be given one month’s salary when the shops open. Puducherry government has finalized the contract for the supply of rice and sugar.
Lakhs of families will benefit
The CM said that funds have been earmarked for the purchase of rice and sugar for the free distribution scheme. About three lakh families are covered under the public distribution system in the Union Territory.
