The musical romantic drama ‘Lamhe 7’, released on 22 November 1991, was made for Rs 7 crore and was able to earn only Rs 6 crore in India. The film also failed to recoup its costs. On the other hand, the budget of action romantic film ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ was Rs 2.50 crore and it earned Rs 7 crore all over India. However, Yash Chopra directorial Lamhe won five awards for Best Film, with Sridevi winning Best Actress, Anupam Kher winning Best Comedian, Honey Irani winning Best Story and Rahi Masoom Raza winning Best Dialogue. Ajay Devgan won the Best Male Newcomer Award at the 1992 Filmfare Awards.
Anil Kapoor had advised to postpone the release of the film
Earlier this year, in an interview, Ajay’s close friend director Rohit Shetty had told that Anil Kapoor had advised Ajay Devgan’s father Veeru Devgan not to release his son’s debut film with his film. Rohit had said, “Lamhe” and “Phool Aur Kaante” were released on the same day. At that time, box office clashes were not a big deal. In fact Anil sir had worked a lot with Veeru ji and he advised him not to go against ‘Lamhe’. He said that Ajay is like his younger brother, but then Kuku ji said that it is okay, we will go ahead with the scheduled release. The moments will continue and our film will also continue. However, the audience appreciated the newcomer and rejected superstar Anil Kapoor’s film.
