TRAI has taken steps towards starting satellite internet service in India. Users will soon be able to use calling and internet services even without mobile network. According to the report, the process of spectrum allocation and pricing can be decided soon by the telecom regulator TRAI. For this, the telecom regulator has issued a consultation paper and sought suggestions from the stakeholders. In simple language, now users will not have to deal with the poor network of telecom companies. They will be able to avail calling and internet facilities even in no network areas.
Consultation paper released
TRAI has issued a consultation paper asking stakeholders to respond by October 18. At the same time, the window for asking counter questions has been opened till October 25. Instructions have been issued to prepare guidelines regarding assignment of radio web for starting satellite internet service. Companies like Airtel, Jio, SpaceX and Amazon can participate in the allocation of satellite networks.
Airtel has already invested in European company OneWeb for satellite connectivity. At the same time, Jio Satellite Communications and Elon Musk’s company SpaceX have also shown their interest in satellite connectivity in India. Apart from this, tech company Amazon Web Services can enter the field of satellite connectivity through its ambitious project Kuiper.
Some time ago, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had sought suggestions from TRAI for the terms and conditions of allocation of Satellite Based Commercial Communication Services. Once a consensus is reached on spectrum allocation and pricing, the way for global companies to enter India will also be cleared. Elon Musk’s company SpaceX has been waiting for approval from the government for a long time.
