Lahore. A case was registered against 150 suspects for spreading propaganda against the Pakistani Army on social media and 22 of them were arrested. Most of the arrested people are associated with the party of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. An official provided this information on Wednesday. At least 12 party workers were killed and hundreds were injured when law enforcers opened fire on protesters in Islamabad on November 26, according to Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The party also claims that around 105 party workers are missing since then.
After the incident, Khan’s supporters started blaming the Pakistani Army for firing on peaceful protesters. The Shehbaz Sharif-led government denied that law enforcers opened fire on the protesters. He expressed commitment to take strict action against those spreading false propaganda on social media. The government constituted a special task force headed by the head of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to crack down on such elements. “Subsequently, the cyber crime branch of the FIA registered a case against around 150 suspects across the country and arrested 22 people,” an FIA official said.
He said the FIA conducted 117 raids to arrest suspects involved in propaganda against government institutions, most of whom were killed in Punjab. He said that a case has been registered against the suspects (social media activists) under various sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). Earlier, international NGO Amnesty International had demanded a transparent investigation into the government’s “lethal action” to disperse PTI supporters from Islamabad’s D-Chowk. PTI supporters had gathered for the release of their jailed leader and former Prime Minister.
