Bangladesh tribunal issues arrest warrant against Hasina

Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal on Thursday issued arrest warrants against 45 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other top Awami League leaders, for alleged crimes against humanity during the recent massive student protests.

Quoting Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, ‘Daily Star’ reported in its news that the tribunal headed by Justice Mohammad Ghulam Murtaza Majumdar passed this order.

The prosecution had filed two petitions in the tribunal in this regard and had appealed to issue arrest warrant against him. The tribunal also directed the concerned authorities to arrest Hasina and 46 others by November 18 and produce them before it, he said.

In August, Bangladesh’s interim government said it would prosecute at the International Criminal Tribunal those involved in killings during the recent mass student protests against the Hasina-led government.

More than 230 people were killed in the violence that broke out in Bangladesh after the ouster of Hasina government. There were widespread protests by students in July against the controversial reservation system in government jobs.
