Minutes later, a tsunami warning was issued that waves up to one meter high were possible in the area. The JMA said a tsunami about 50 centimeters high was detected in the Yane district of Hachijo Island. The agency said the offshore quake struck about 180 kilometers south of Hachijo Island, about 300 kilometers south of Tokyo. According to Japan’s NHK public television channel, residents of Hachijo Island said they did not feel the earthquake and only heard the tsunami warning.
