taipei: China has sent 14 warships, seven military aircraft and four balloons to the island as part of a strategy to put pressure on Taiwan over its claims. This information has been given by the Defense Ministry of Taiwan. China has carried out these military activities at a time when there was speculation that Beijing could conduct military exercises around the island in response to the recent visit of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te to Pacific allies including the US.
China considers Taiwan as its territory
China considers self-ruled Taiwan, with a population of 23 million people, as its territory and objects to other countries’ formal relations with Taiwan. Most countries, including America, do not recognize Taiwan as a country, but America is unofficially a major supporter of Taiwan and sells arms to it. The Chinese government has pledged to occupy Taiwan through military force if necessary and frequently sends ships and military aircraft near the island.
What did Taiwan’s Defense Ministry say?
According to Taiwan’s Defense Ministry, 14 warships, seven military aircraft and four balloons were spotted in the 24 hours between 6 a.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday. The ministry said six of the planes crossed the center line of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial border area between Taiwan and China. According to the ministry, one of these balloons passed over the northern tip of the island.

tension has increased
It is noteworthy that Taiwan is a self-governing island and China claims it as its territory. Tension over this issue has increased in recent years. China has increased its presence in the maritime and airspace around Taiwan. Now it is sending a large number of warplanes and naval ships for military exercises near Taiwan and its coast guard keeps patrolling. (AP)
