In a relief to Imran Khan, a Pakistani court on Wednesday acquitted the former Prime Minister and his close aides in the case of illegal assembly and violation of law.
An Islamabad district and sessions court dismissed the charges and acquitted Khan, Sheikh Rashid, Asad Qaiser, Saifullah Niazi, Sadaqat Abbasi, Faisal Javed and Ali Nawaz. Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed was appointed home minister during the Khan-led government.
Judicial Magistrate Yasir Mahmood dismissed the charges of violating the Amplifier Act and other laws. The case was registered at Islamabad’s Abpara police station on August 20, 2022, alleging violation of public order during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party-led protests.
The dismissal of this case is a relief for Khan who has been in jail since August last year. Dozens of cases have been registered against Khan since his government fell in April 2022.
