Dhaka: Durga Puja celebrations began on Wednesday amid tight security at temples and pavilions in Bangladesh. The interim government declared Thursday an official holiday on the occasion of Saptami. The five-day Durga Puja festival in Bangladesh will conclude on Sunday with the immersion of idols of Goddess Durga. Mohammad Yunus, a key advisor to the interim government, is expected to visit Dhakeshwari temple, one of the major Shakti Peethas, on Sunday.
Why were fewer pandals made?
Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council leader Kajol Debnath told PTI, “We are celebrating Durga Puja festival on the second day (Saptami) today. No untoward incident has been reported from anywhere yet.” Debnath said that this year 31,462 pandals have been made for Durga Puja, whereas in 2023 this figure was 32,408. He attributed the decline in the number of pandals to floods caused by monsoon and other related issues.
