High ranking Brazilian officials had put pressure on Bolsonaro to stage a coup
Sao Paulo . High-ranking officers of the Brazilian army had put pressure on then President Jair Bolsonaro to remain in power by staging a coup. This has been revealed after some audio recordings were leaked at the end of the year 2022. In 53 audio recordings obtained by federal police, members of the military can be heard expressing their desire to prevent leftist Luis Inácio Lula da Silva from becoming president. The audio recording was obtained by The Associated Press on Monday.
Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who oversaw a wide-ranging police investigation, cited some of these audio recordings in his ruling last week, accusing him of plotting to assassinate then-President-elect Lula in 2022 and then bring him to power on January 8, 2023. Had ordered the arrest of five people for attempting to eviction. Supporters of Bolsonaro destroyed government buildings in the capital Brasília in an attempted coup.
Colonel Roberto Raymundo Crisculi, a former deputy commander of the army’s special forces, told retired Brigadier General Mario Fernandes that the far-right leader was the obvious choice after Lula’s third consecutive victory. Fernandes was then second only to the Secretary General of the Presidency. “Civil war will either happen now or later,” Crisculi said in an audio. We have the perfect time for civil war now. People are on the streets, we are getting huge support. Let’s do this now. Let’s talk to the leader first.”
The President of Brazil is referred to as the first leader. Neither the former President nor his ministers were heard speaking in the recording. The audios are not directly related to the formal charges filed by Brazilian police on November 21. Police had accused Bolsonaro and 36 others of attempting a coup. The Brazilian military did not respond to a request for comment about the federal police investigation.
