India on Monday recalled its High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma and other senior diplomats and officials as the diplomatic row between the two countries escalated. New Delhi also expelled six Canadian diplomats soon after. The government’s move comes in response to Canada designating the Indian High Commissioner and other diplomats as ‘persons of interest’ in the investigation into the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement saying that the Government of India has decided to expel 6 Canadian diplomats. They have to leave India on or before 11:59 pm on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

Along with this, while announcing the recall of India’s High Commissioner to Canada, the Ministry of External Affairs underlined in a statement that the actions of the Trudeau government in the environment of extremism and violence have endangered the safety of diplomats.
