Israel and Hezbollah agreed to ceasefire

Israel has approved a US-brokered ceasefire deal with Lebanon’s Hezbollah, ending nearly 14 months of fighting in the Gaza Strip.

Israel and Hezbollah agreed to a ceasefire on Tuesday, which would be the first major step towards ending the region-wide unrest triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. But it is not related to the devastating conflict in Gaza, where Hamas still holds many people captive.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the ceasefire proposal presented by the Prime Minister has been approved by the country’s Security Cabinet. US President Joe Biden called the agreement “good news” and said his administration would make renewed efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Netanyahu presented the cease-fire proposal to Cabinet ministers after his televised address, in which he cited the country’s achievements in operations against Israel’s enemies across the region. He said a ceasefire with Hezbollah would further isolate Hamas in Gaza, allowing Israel to focus on its main enemy Iran.
