Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s ruling coalition lost its majority in elections for the 465-member lower house of parliament. Tokyo. Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s ruling coalition lost its majority in elections for the 465-member lower house of parliament. The results reflect voter anger over the ruling party’s widespread financial “scams”. Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) remains the top party in Japan’s parliament and a government change is not expected, but the results create political uncertainty. These results will make it difficult for Ishiba to get his party’s policies passed in Parliament and he may have to look for a third coalition partner.

The LDP coalition retains its majority in the relatively less powerful upper house. According to Japanese media, the ruling coalition, along with partner Komeito, won 215 seats, up from 279 earlier. This is the coalition’s worst electoral result since it was briefly out of power in 2009. In Japan’s bicameral parliament, the lower house is very powerful. Ishiba took charge on October 1. He had ordered snap elections in the hope of rallying support after his predecessor Fumio Kishida failed to quell public anger over the Liberal Democratic Party’s actions.

“We take the results very seriously,” Ishiba told Japan’s national NHK television late Sunday. I believe voters are asking us to think more and be a party that lives up to their expectations.” Ishiba said the LDP will still lead the ruling coalition and make key policies, a planned supplement Will prepare budget and carry out political reforms. He indicated that his party was ready to cooperate with opposition groups if it was possible to meet public expectations.
