Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India has so far provided lines of credit and grant assistance worth $5 billion to Sri Lanka. We have support in all 25 districts of Sri Lanka and the selection of our projects is always based on the development priorities of the partner countries. The people-to-people relations between India and Sri Lanka are linked to our civilizations.

India and Sri Lanka exchanged MoUs in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that I welcome Sri Lankan President Dissanayake to India. We are glad that you have chosen India for your first foreign visit as President. Today’s visit is creating new momentum and energy in our relations. We have adopted a futuristic vision for our partnership. We have emphasized investment led growth and connectivity in our economic partnership and have decided that physical, digital and energy connectivity will be important pillars of our partnership.

When Pali language was given the status of “classical language” in India, it was celebrated in Sri Lanka too. We discussed issues related to the livelihood of fishermen. We agree that we must proceed with a humanitarian approach to this matter.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that this is my first foreign trip after becoming the President of Sri Lanka. I am very happy that I could come to Delhi on my first state visit. I would like to thank India for the invitation extended to me and for the warm hospitality extended to the entire delegation, including me. I would like to thank PM Modi and President Murmu…this visit paved the way for further development of cooperation between the two countries.
