Two people have died and 24 others were rescued after a migrant boat capsized in bad weather near Greece’s eastern coastal island of Samos. The Greek Coast Guard gave this information on Monday.
Authorities said they had received reports of an emergency and distress from passengers on board the boat and that a coast guard patrol boat found the migrants’ boat partially submerged north of Samos.
22 people were rescued in this accident and the survivors informed the Coast Guard about the two missing passengers. The bodies of the missing people – a man and a woman – were recovered early Monday, the Coast Guard said.
This is the latest case of a migrant boat meeting with an accident at sea. These migrants were trying to take refuge in a European country by sea route from the coastal areas of nearby Turkey or by crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa.
Survivors of the accident told authorities that they had paid seven thousand to 10 thousand euros per person for the journey from the northern Libyan port of Tobruk to Greece.
Last week, two women and two children died when a human trafficking boat from Turkey capsized off the island of Kos in eastern Greece.
