Peshawar: In Pakistan, Muslims have become the enemies of Muslims. At least 10 more people have been killed as sporadic clashes between Sunni and Shia communities in the restive north-west region continued despite a ceasefire. While 21 others have been injured. Police gave this information on Wednesday. The latest violence took place on Tuesday in Kurram district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, bordering Afghanistan. At least 10 people were killed and 21 others injured in sporadic community violence, police said.
Pakistan police said the clashes between Alizai and Bagan communities in Kurram district began on Friday last week. Earlier on Thursday, a convoy of passenger trains was attacked near Parachinar in which 47 people were killed. At least 37 people were killed and several others injured in the violence on Friday and Saturday, police said. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack on the convoy on Thursday. A seven-day ceasefire was reached between the Shia and Sunni communities on Sunday after meetings between the provincial government delegation and elders of the two communities. However, police said sporadic clashes continued despite the ceasefire.
Shia Muslims are 15 percent in Pakistan
Sporadic fighting took place in Ghojagari, Matasanagar and Kunj Alizai areas on Tuesday. Kurram Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud said a large jirga (tribal council) of elders from Hangu, Orakzai and Kohat districts would visit Kurram to mediate afresh to end the hostilities. He said that the Commissioner of Kohat will lead the peace delegation. Meanwhile, Kurram District Headquarters Hospital Superintendent Dr Mir Hasan Khan said there was a shortage of medicines due to the closure of roads leading to Parachinar after Thursday’s attack. Shia Muslims constitute about 15 percent of the population of 24 crore in Sunni-dominated Pakistan. Although the two groups generally live together peacefully, tensions remain, especially in Kurram. The current violence is linked to a land dispute. (Language)
