At least 29 people were killed in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip overnight and on Wednesday, including an attack on a home where displaced people were sheltering in the isolated north, which killed 19 people. There appears to be no end in sight to the Israel-Hamas war despite Israel reaching a ceasefire with Lebanon’s Hezbollah and focusing on ousting Syrian President Bashar Assad. Both the outgoing and incoming US administrations have said they hope to end the war before the inauguration but months-long ceasefire talks have repeatedly stalled.

The attack took place in the northern town of Beit Lahiya, near the border with Israel, killing 19 people, according to nearby Kamal Adwan Hospital. Hospital records show that those killed included a family of eight, including four children, their parents and two grandparents. The hospital said a woman and her two children were killed in another attack near its entrance on Wednesday. Another attack on the Nussirat refugee camp in central Gaza killed at least seven people, according to Awda Hospital. It said the dead included two children, their parents and three relatives. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. The army says it tries to avoid harming civilians and accuses militants of hiding among them, putting their lives in danger.

Meanwhile, militants in central Gaza fired four shells at Israel on Wednesday, two of which were intercepted, the army said. The other two fell in open areas and there were no reports of any casualties. The army ordered the evacuation of a five-block area of the Maghazi refugee camp built in central Gaza, saying the rockets were fired from there. The orders indicate that Israel will soon launch attacks in the area. The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting about 250, including children and older adults. About 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, of whom at least a third are believed dead.
