Vientiane Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a visit to Laos from today. Here he witnessed a presentation of the Lao version of the Ramayana, part of India’s centuries-old heritage. It also reflects the shared heritage and age-old civilizational ties between India and Laos. During this period, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar was also present along with Prime Minister Modi. After arriving in Vientiane, they witnessed a staging of an episode of the Lao Ramayana ‘Falak Phalam’ or ‘Phralak Phram’, performed by artists from the prestigious Royal Theater of Luang Prabang. According to ‘frlkfrram.com’, the Lao Ramayana is different from the original Indian version. PM Modi was mesmerized after seeing this. Let us tell you that this Lao version of Ramayana reached Laos around the 16th century through Buddhist groups. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a post on ‘X’, “Shared heritage and traditions are bringing the two countries closer. “This presentation was an excellent showcase of the rich and shared India-Laos engagement.”
Ramayana has been staged in Laos for centuries.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that the Ramayana is still performed in Laos and the epic reflects the shared heritage and age-old civilizational ties between the two countries. Various aspects of Indian culture and tradition have been followed and preserved in Laos for centuries. This also proves how deep the imprint of Indian culture is on the world. Both the countries are working together to illuminate their common heritage. Earlier, Modi participated in the blessing ceremony of senior Buddhist monks of the Central Buddhist Fellowship Organization of Lao PDR, which was held under the chairmanship of Mahveth Massenai, distinguished abbot of Si Saket Temple in Vientiane.

I am grateful to him for his blessings.” The Ministry of External Affairs said that the shared Buddhist heritage represents another aspect of the close civilizational ties between India and Laos. The Prime Minister also visited an exhibition on the restoration and conservation work of the Wat Phu temple complex by the Archaeological Survey of India in Laos. The Archaeological Survey of India is engaged in the restoration work of Vat Phu temple and related monuments in Laos.
Jaiswal said, “Vat Phu is a symbol of the close civilizational ties and heritage between India and Laos. “The Archaeological Survey of India is doing extraordinary work to restore and conserve Vat Phu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Laos.” Modi said, “Continually deepening cultural bonds! India is proud to work closely with Lao PDR towards the conservation and restoration of various heritage sites including the Wat Phu complex. (Language)
