Georgetown (Guyana): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a big step towards strengthening relations with Caribbean countries during his visit to Guyana. PM Modi emphasized on various sectors like trade, technology and tourism during the second India-CARICOM summit in George Town. He proposed seven main things to strengthen relations between India and CARICOM during talks with Caribbean countries on Wednesday.
When PM Modi reached Guyana on Wednesday, it was recorded as the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister in more than 50 years. They discussed ways to strengthen ties in areas such as economic cooperation, agriculture and food security, health and pharmaceuticals and science and innovation. Caribbean countries also agreed on this.
Proposal for online portal to connect countries
PM Modi said at the India-CARICOM summit that, “To promote the five ‘T’s” – trade, technology, tourism, talent and tradition, an online portal will be created to connect the private sector and stakeholders of all countries. Modi said, “India is moving ahead in the SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) sector.” Last year during the India-CARICOM meeting, we had announced a grant of US$ 1 million for the SME sectors. We should now focus on its implementation. CARICOM (Caribbean Community and Common Market) is a regional grouping. When PM Modi landed on Guyana soil, President Irfan Ali, his counterpart Mark Anthony Phillips and more than 12 cabinet ministers came to receive him at the airport.
