Indian government officials said that Nigeria will honor Prime Minister Modi with the ‘Grand Commander of the Order of Niger’ (GCON) award. Till now, Britain’s late Queen Elizabeth has been the only foreign celebrity to be awarded the GCON in 1969.

Abuja. Nigeria will honor Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the country’s second highest national award ‘Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger’, making him the second foreign dignitary to receive the award. Prime Minister Modi reached Nigeria on Sunday as part of the first leg of his three-nation visit. This is the first time in 17 years that the Prime Minister of India is visiting Nigeria. Modi has arrived here on the invitation of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He will also visit Brazil and Guyana.

Indian government officials said that Nigeria will honor Prime Minister Modi with the ‘Grand Commander of the Order of Niger’ (GCON) award. Till now, Britain’s late Queen Elizabeth has been the only foreign celebrity to be awarded the GCON in 1969. Officials said that this will be the 17th international award given by any country to Prime Minister Modi.

When the Prime Minister arrived in Nigeria on Sunday, he was warmly welcomed by Minister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. He presented the ‘keys’ of Abuja city to the Prime Minister. “This ‘key’ reflects the trust and respect Nigerians have for the Prime Minister,” the Foreign Ministry said in a post on the social media platform X.
