Peshawar (Pakistan). Three terrorists who attacked a polio vaccination team in Pakistan’s restive north-western province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been killed by security forces. Sources here said that in another incident, terrorists took hostage a polio vaccination team at a ‘dispensary’ in the same province. A day before the attack on the polio vaccination team, on Monday, Pakistan launched its third nationwide vaccination drive to vaccinate 4.5 crore children.
The first incident occurred in the Aurakzai tribal district bordering Afghanistan, where a policeman was killed in an attack on polio vaccination workers. Sources said the police retaliated and killed at least three terrorists. No group has claimed responsibility for this attack. In the second incident in Shewa Tehsil of North Waziristan, terrorists took hostage the polio vaccination team at Mamet Kot ‘Dispensary’.
According to sources, the attackers also confiscated weapons from the police officers. Tribal people in Pakistan are against vaccinating their children against polio and cite Sharia to support their view, calling it un-Islamic. Pakistan on Monday launched its third nationwide polio vaccination campaign to protect 45 million children from the deadly disease. Polio viruses have been found in samples taken from 16 districts of Pakistan.
