What is SCO?

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a permanent intergovernmental international organization established on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai, China. It soon expanded to nine countries with the addition of India and Pakistan in 2017. Russia supported India’s entry as a long-term strategic partner. China also supported its ally Pakistan to prevent the balance of power from tilting in favor of Russia. India was made an observer in the SCO in 2005 and has generally participated in the group’s ministerial-level meetings, which primarily focus on security and economic cooperation in the Eurasian region. The SCO is an influential economic and security bloc and has emerged as one of the largest interregional international organizations.
