It has been almost three months since Sheikh Hasina’s government fell in Bangladesh. But even today the situation there is more or less the same. First the fundamentalists created ruckus across the country. After that, thousands of BMP workers took out a rally in the country’s capital and demanded fresh elections and quick reforms. Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League is preparing to hold massive protests against the interim government. If we look at it, there has been a stir in Bangladesh since the coup. In Dhaka, the police has even taken strict action against Awami League workers and supporters. The Bangladesh Army has also detained hundreds of activists ahead of their demonstration.
To stop the Awami League workers, Bangladesh Army-Police and students of schools, colleges and universities have gathered in large gatherings in many areas. BNP and Jamaat have announced that they will not allow Awami League to protest. Dhaka Police has not given them permission to organize the protest rally. 191 army units have been deployed across the country. Meanwhile, various quarters of the government have also warned that Awami League will not be allowed to organize the protest march. Terming the Awami League as fascist, Bangladesh’s interim government said it would not allow ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party to hold the planned rally.
Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, said in a Facebook post that the interim government will not tolerate any violence or any attempt to break law and order in the country. He said that Awami League in its present form is a fascist party. There is no way that this fascist party will be allowed to hold protests in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, organized the rally and is pressuring the interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus to bring rapid reforms and hold the next national elections.
