Yunus, during a tour of the damaged Ganabhavan palace, said the museum should preserve the memories of Sheikh Hasina’s alleged misrule and the anger of the people when she removed her from power.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, leader of the caretaker government in Bangladesh, announced that the former palace of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be turned into a museum to commemorate the revolution that ousted her from power. Yunus, during a tour of the damaged Ganabhavan palace, said the museum should preserve the memories of Sheikh Hasina’s alleged misrule and the anger of the people when she removed her from power.

Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee India by helicopter on August 5 following the student-led rebellion. The 84-year-old microfinance pioneer was appointed the country’s chief advisor. During her 15-year rule, Sheikh Hasina committed massive human rights abuses, including mass detention and extrajudicial killings of political opponents. This month, a Bangladesh court had issued an arrest warrant for him.

Before the fall of Hasina, more than 700 people were killed during a brutal police crackdown. As soon as she fled, thousands of people stormed her former residence, which the government described as a symbol of repression. The walls of the palace, which were looted and damaged in the chaos that followed Hasina’s escape, are covered with graffiti denouncing her fallen regime.
