South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol accepted the resignation of his defense minister. Opposition parties have presented an impeachment motion in Parliament against the President and the Defense Minister in protest against the imposition of martial law.
South Korea’s President replaces his Defense Minister. Opposition parties called for the impeachment of both men over the surprise-but-brief imposition of martial law that brought armed soldiers onto the streets of Seoul. The Democratic Party and other smaller opposition parties submitted a joint motion to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over last night’s martial law declaration. Martial law lasted for about six hours, as the National Assembly immediately voted to overturn the President’s decision, forcing his Cabinet to remove it before Wednesday morning.
Opposition parties had earlier submitted a separate motion to impeach Kim over allegations that he recommended Yun impose ‘martial law’. Kim had offered to resign and apologized for the trouble and disruption caused to the public. According to the Defense Ministry, Kim said that all soldiers performing duties related to martial law were acting on his instructions and all responsibility is mine.
The impeachment motion against Yun was introduced in parliament on Thursday, meaning it could be voted on between Friday and Sunday. According to National Assembly officials, it will be voided if it is not voted on within 72 hours of being introduced in Parliament, but if the existing motion is voided or rejected through division of votes If so, a new proposal can be presented.
