Colombo. The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 12 Indian fishermen on charges of illegal fishing in the sea and also seized their boat. This information was given in an official statement. With the arrest of 12 more people by the Sri Lankan Navy, the number of Indian nationals caught in such incidents in the island country this year has increased to 462. The Sri Lanka Navy said in a press release that the fishermen were arrested and their boat was also seized off the Point Pedro coast in the northern province of Jaffna. The 12 captured fishermen were taken to Kankesanthurai port and will be handed over to the Malady Fisheries Inspectorate for further action, it said.

The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 462 Indian fishermen and seized 62 of their boats for illegal fishing in the island’s territorial waters so far in 2024, the statement said. It said the fishermen have been handed over to authorities for legal action. Sri Lanka’s Fisheries Ministry said that a 12-member Indian team will arrive here on Tuesday to discuss the recurring problem (fishing by fishermen) between the two neighbours. Fishermen from both countries are often arrested for unknowingly entering each other’s territorial waters.
