The jailed 72-year-old former prime minister had given his last call for nationwide protests on November 24. He made this call on 13 November. Khan had condemned the theft of mandate, unjust arrest of people and the passage of the 26th amendment of the Constitution. On the 26th amendment of the Constitution, he had said that it has worked to strengthen the dictatorial rule.
The protesters, led by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi, began their journey from the devastated province to the capital on Sunday, but faced hurdles en route. Authorities had blocked highways by placing shipping containers, but protesters removed the barriers with the help of demolition equipment and other heavy machines, although this affected their pace and plans during the demonstration. After an overnight stay at Haro in Attock district of Punjab, the team resumed their journey with the aim of reaching the capital by afternoon today. The visit of a high-level delegation from Belarus to Pakistan has already prompted the government to ban rallies by invoking Section 144, a colonial-era law used to curb political activities.
