Voting is going to take place today for the historic presidential election in America. Republican Party leader Donald Trump and his Democratic Party rival Kamala Harris visited key election states and gave their campaign ending speeches ahead of voting day. Today Americans will be lining up at polling stations across the country to cast their vote and decide whether they want to see Kamala Harris or Donald Trump elected to the presidency. However, even as millions of people prepare to cast their votes today, there are also millions of others who have already cast their votes as part of America’s early voting process. Early voting in America is done in two ways: by mail or in person.

what is early voting
As the name suggests, early voting allows a person to cast their vote for the US presidential elections before the actual day of voting. All states except Mississippi, New Hampshire, and Alabama offer voters the opportunity to cast their ballot before Election Day. Voters at these places can cast their votes before the scheduled day. However, counting of these votes begins on election day. In some states officials have to wait until voting is over to start counting.
More than 7.8 crore Americans have cast their votes
According to the University of Florida’s Election Lab, which tracks early voting and voting by mail across the US, more than 78 million Americans have already cast their votes. Of the seven important states, Pennsylvania has emerged as the most important state, with 19 Electoral College votes. After this, North Carolina and Georgia have 16-16, Michigan has 15 and Arizona has 11 electoral college votes. Other important states are Wisconsin with 10 and Nevada with six Electoral College votes. There are 50 states in America and most of them have been voting for the same party in every election, except for the ‘swing’ states. It is said that the inclination of voters keeps changing in these ‘swing’ states which are considered electorally important. Electoral College votes are given to states based on population. Voting takes place for a total of 538 electoral college votes. The candidate who receives 270 or more electoral college votes is declared the winner of the election.

What are the benefits of early voting?
The biggest advantage of early voting is that it allows all registered voters to cast their vote. This allows every registered voter who may have trouble voting on Election Day to cast their vote. This may also increase the enthusiasm of the voters. For example, when celebrities like Taylor Swift endorse a candidate, it may encourage more people to vote early.
