Israeli Defense Forces have claimed victory over the death of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar during a ground operation in Rafah. A number of key details related to the operation have been disseminated since 16 October. Earlier, the IDF had shared footage capturing the last moments of the top Hamas leader, where he was seen taking shelter in a dilapidated building to escape the Israeli attack. Now, more details related to the slain terrorist’s autopsy have emerged, including how his death was confirmed and what injuries he sustained at the time of his death.

Starting with the final moments captured, Sinwar was seen sitting hunched over a chair, covered in dust, with his head and face covered with a dupatta. He reportedly suffered serious injuries to his hand at that time too, but when he saw a drone coming, he threw a stick over his head in its direction. Speaking to an international media-outlet about that operation, Dr. Chen Kugel, director of Israel’s National Forensic Institute, shared details from the autopsy report. Dr. Kugel confirmed that Sinwar died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Dr. Kugel said in an interview with CNN that serious injuries from other sources, such as his right arm being torn off by a missile strike, fallen masonry on his left leg, and multiple shrapnel wounds to his body, were considered a cause of death. The cause was a bullet wound on the head. , Kugel also noted that Sinwar’s forearm was seriously damaged, possibly by shrapnel from a missile or tank shell. He said that there would have been heavy bleeding, and that it appeared that Sinwar had used electrical wire to try to stop it, but it did not work due to the severity of the injuries.
