26 December History: The day of 26 December is recorded in history with a tragic incident. In fact, on this day in 2004, after an earthquake of 8.9 magnitude on the Richter scale near Aceh located in the northern part of Indonesia, the tsunami that arose under the sea caused huge devastation in many countries including India.
Till that time no early warning system of tsunami was in practice. The result was that no one had any idea of such a devastation. This sea disaster took the lives of a large number of foreign tourists staying in seaside hotels and resorts in Thailand and other countries.

1904: Launch of the country’s first ‘Cross Country Motorcar Rally’ between Delhi and Mumbai.

1978 : Former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi was released from jail. Morarji Desai’s government arrested Indira Gandhi on 19 December.
1997: Naveen Patnaik, son of prominent Odisha leader Biju Patnaik, founded the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
2003: An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale hit Iran’s south-eastern city of Bam, causing huge loss of life and property.
2004: After the powerful earthquake, tsunami caused huge devastation in India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Maldives and surrounding areas. About two lakh thirty thousand people died.
2006: Australian spin bowler Shane Warne created history by taking 700 wickets in international Test cricket.
2012: Launch of the world’s longest high-speed railway from Beijing, the capital of China, to Guangzhou, another major city in the country.
2023 : Explosion near Israeli Embassy in Delhi, no one injured.
2023: The plane, which was detained for four days in France due to suspicion of human trafficking, reached Mumbai with 276 passengers.
