Along with all the political parties, the general public is also eagerly waiting for the results. Let us tell you that after about 10 years, Assembly elections 2024 have been organized in Jammu and Kashmir. However, even before the results were out, political controversy has started in Jammu and Kashmir. Actually, this dispute is taking place regarding the five members to be nominated by the Governor in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Let us know why the opposition parties are in tension regarding the five members.
Who will be the 5 nominated MLAs?
In fact, under the amendments made in the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act 2019 and 2023, the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory can nominate a total of 5 members to the Assembly. These members will have the same powers and voting rights as other MLAs. The members to be nominated include two women, two members including a woman from the displaced Kashmiri community and one member from the displaced community of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.
Congress, National Conference, PDP protested
Congress, National Conference (NC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed opposition to the nomination of 5 members to the Assembly before the formation of the government. These parties have also warned of going to the Supreme Court regarding this matter. Congress has termed any such step as an attack on the basic principles of democracy and the Constitution. At the same time, Omar Abdullah has said that it is the job of the government to nominate people and send them to the Lieutenant Governor. Apart from these, PDP leader Iltija Mufti said that giving the Lieutenant Governor the right to nominate five members in the Assembly is pre-result rigging in the elections.
