Accused absconded from the court after hearing the sentence of 7 years in jail, was guilty in ATM robbery case

A major incident took place in Nabarangpur district of Odisha on Monday. Two accused convicted in ATM robbery case absconded from the court. Both these accused Shakeel and Shahrukh were involved in the robbery of State Bank of India ATM located near Nabarangpur Block Office on January 31, 2024. Police had arrested five people in this case, including Shakeel Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Fazal Khan, Jahul Khan from Haryana and Nikhil Kumar from Bihar.

The court had convicted and sentenced

On Monday, all the five accused were presented in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate of Navrangpur, where the court found them guilty on the basis of 25 witnesses and evidence and sentenced them to 7 years imprisonment. After the verdict, Shakeel and Shahrukh escaped from the court premises, avoiding the eyes of the police. The police took immediate action and started searching for them and vehicles are being checked by blocking the city and surrounding areas.

ATM was looted on January 31

Giving information about the case, government lawyer Minketan Pujari said that on January 31, the accused had looted the ATM and the police had also recovered some money from them. Action was taken against the accused under sections 557, 380, 436 of IPC and section 4 of PDPP and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.

Questions on police security arrangements

The police have appealed to the public that if they get any information about these two accused, they should immediately inform the police. Police say that both the accused will be arrested soon. After this incident, questions are being raised on the security arrangements. (Report- Shubham Kumar)
