The Supreme Court said that all states in the NCR region should take an immediate decision to close all physical classes for students up to class 12. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih was hearing a plea seeking directions to control air pollution in Delhi and surrounding areas. The court came down heavily on the Delhi government and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) for the delay in implementing anti-pollution curbs under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the national capital. Notably, the air quality index in Delhi rose to 486 on Monday, the worst level this season and remained in the severe plus category for the second consecutive day.

Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for the petitioner, sought directions from the court that physical classes should also be suspended for class 10 and 12 students.
