Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma said that the Assam government on Tuesday decided to change the name of Karimganj district located in Barak Valley to Shribhoomi. Sharma told a press conference here that this decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting.
“More than 100 years ago, Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore had described the modern Karimganj district as Shribhoomi – the land of Goddess Lakshmi and today the Assam Cabinet has fulfilled the long-standing demand of our people,” he said. Sharma said that the initiative to change the name of the district will reflect the hopes and aspirations of the people here.
