Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan held a meeting with farmers and farmer unions on Thursday. After this meeting, Shivraj said that we had a serious discussion with all the invitees on issues related to farmers and farming. We informed them about the new steps taken by the government and the progress made and in return, they gave us valuable feedback. The minister said that some issues related to the state governments will be shared with them and some issues related to the central government we will resolve. The Union Agriculture Minister said that the government will purchase soybean crop from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh at Minimum Support Price (MSP). He also said that the government has increased the import duty on oil from other countries. He said that if any state asked us, we bought their soybean crop. We have assured Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh to buy soybean at MSP… When the prices of our oilseeds fell, we decided to increase the import duty on oil received from other countries. 27.5 percent import duty was imposed. Prices of oilseeds including soybean started increasing and I hope that they will reach MSP soon.
The objective of the discussion was to address important issues affecting farming communities and analyze the challenges faced in the agriculture sector. Earlier on Wednesday, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has resolved that farmers’ crops will be purchased at a profit of at least 50 percent more than their cost. He said that PM Modi had resolved that their crops would be purchased from farmers at at least 50 percent profit on the cost of production.
