Before the Assam elections, the opposition Congress protested fiercely against the rising prices of petrol and diesel in all 34 districts of Assam. Senior Congress leaders, including former Union Minister and AICC General Secretary Mukul Wasnik, led the protests. This issue has also become a major agenda for opposition parties ahead of the Assembly elections to be held in April-May.
Assam Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the withdrawal of additional cess of Rs 5 imposed on petrol and diesel on February 12, while presenting a vote-on-account in the state assembly. The cess was imposed when the Covid-19 epidemic was at its peak. Addressing a protest rally in Hojai, Assam Pradesh Congress President Ripun Bora said that the base price of petrol in the state is Rs 33.46 per liter and diesel is Rs 31.82 per liter. Bora said, however, the common man is forced to pay Rs 87 per liter for petrol and Rs 82 per liter for diesel. BJP is looting people in the name of taxes.
Pradyut Bordoloi, president of the state Congress campaign campaign committee, said, “I would just like to ask the BJP government on what basis does it fix petroleum prices every day?” What explanation does the government have for hurting the people of Assam in this way. Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said that in the midst of a severe epidemic, the BJP government is robbing the public by increasing fuel prices. Congress Legislature Party leader Devvrat Saikia said that the common man is being hit by inflation, so will the BJP government clarify what it is taxing for? Which government giving so much pain to the people to benefit them.
Sushmita Dev, president of the All India Mahila Congress, which is spearheading the protests in various districts, said that, the so-called double-engine BJP government at the Center and in the state is fooling the people. Former Lok Sabha member and late Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev’s daughter said, reducing the price of petrol and diesel by 5 rupees before the election is a hoax! The reality is that the Modi government at the Center has increased the tax to benefit its corporate friends.
