Eight out of ten seats became vacant after the MLAs were elected as MPs in the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year. The by-election on the ninth seat, Shishamau, is being held due to the disqualification of SP MLA Irfan Solanki, who is convicted in a criminal case. The by-elections in UP are a big test for the opposition, which is trying to repeat its Lok Sabha success in the state. SP won 37 seats, while Congress managed to secure six seats, boosting the morale of the party which has been marginalized in the state for years.
