A Home Ministry notification on Thursday said six of the 19 police stations already zoned out are being covered under AFSPA after reviewing the security situation in Manipur. The order issued by MHA Additional Secretary Piyush Goyal said it has been observed that the situation remains volatile amid the ongoing caste violence in Manipur and border areas of Bishnupur-Churachandpur, Imphal East, Kangpokpi-Imphal West and Jiribam districts. Intermittent firing continues in violence-hit areas, with several instances of active insurgent participation.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) declared areas under the jurisdiction of six police stations in Manipur as “disturbed areas”, also bringing these areas under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act or AFSPA, 1958. Earlier 19 police stations were kept out of AFSPA. The move comes a day after the Home Ministry sent 20 additional paramilitary companies or about 2,500 personnel to Manipur against the backdrop of fresh attacks on civilians and renewed firing between forces and militants, adding to the rising tension in that state. The order said AFSPA is being re-imposed in areas falling under police stations of Sekmai and Lamshang in Imphal West district; Lamlai in Imphal East; Jiribam in Jiribam district; Limakhong in Kangpokpi District; and Moirang in Bishnupur district. This order will remain in force till 31 March 2025.
