Chennai and surrounding areas received rainfall overnight, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting that the low pressure area may strengthen soon. Although civic officials said preventive measures did not result in water stagnation in the subways, waterlogging occurred in some areas, causing inconvenience to road users.
It has been raining intermittently in Chennai and its suburbs, including parts of Tiruvallur district, since Monday night. The IMD said in a post on ‘X’: “Well marked low pressure area over south central part of Bay of Bengal at 0530 hrs IST today, 15 October 2024. likely to intensify into a depression during next 2 days and The depression is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards towards North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh coasts over Westcentral Arabian Sea at 0530 hrs IST today, October 15, 2024. It was in the same area, about 550 km south-southeast, 750 km east of Salalah (Oman) and 950 km east of Al Ghaydah (Yemen).
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin reviewed the preparations made by the authorities to deal with the challenges posed by possible heavy rains. He directed that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Tamil Nadu Disaster Response Force be deployed in advance in the affected areas.
During the meeting with Greater Chennai Corporation officials, it was revealed that the Municipal Corporation has prepared 990 water pumps, 57 tractors equipped with pump sets and 36 mechanized boats for emergency situations. Additionally, 46 metric tons of bleaching powder and phenyl is available for sanitation efforts. Around 169 fully equipped relief centers will be activated depending on the situation.
