Rajya Sabha MP and Congress leader P Chidambaram said moving 5,000 soldiers to Manipur is not a solution to the crisis in the state. He held Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh responsible for the unstable situation in the northeastern state. He also reiterated the Congress’ stand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should visit the state himself to handle the situation. Chidambaram’s comments came after the Meitei group took to the streets on Monday and locked several government offices in protest against the recent killings in Jiribam.
Chidambaram said sending more than 5000 central armed police personnel is not a solution to the Manipur crisis. This is more intelligent. To accept that Chief Minister Biren Singh is the cause of the crisis and he has to be removed immediately. The Center has decided to send around 5,000 paramilitary forces to the state to deal with the situation. He said it makes more sense. The Meiteis, Kuki-zo and Nagas can live together in one state only if they have genuine territorial autonomy. This is more statesmanship: for the Honorable Prime Minister to leave his stubbornness, visit Manipur, and speak to the people of Manipur with humility and know first-hand their grievances and aspirations.
Congress is demanding the Prime Minister to visit Manipur state. The party has also demanded the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah. Congress and BJP offices were vandalized in the hill district of Jiribam, where an unidentified body was found earlier, sparking violence. The unrest follows incidents where angry mobs set fire to the houses of a senior minister and three BJP MLAs, including a Congress MLA, in different districts of the Imphal Valley, where indefinite curfew has been imposed. Security forces stopped the agitators from attacking the ancestral house of Manipur Chief Minister on Saturday evening. More than 220 people have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced due to ethnic violence between the Meitei of Imphal valley and Kuki-Zo groups from the surrounding hills since May last year.
