A court in Malerkotla district in Punjab on Saturday sentenced Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Naresh Yadav from Delhi’s Mehrauli to two years in prison in a 2016 Quran desecration case.
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Parminder Singh Grewal on Friday convicted Yadav in the case and pronounced the verdict on Saturday. Yadav, who was present in the court at the sentencing, was also fined Rs 11,000.
The court upheld the two-year sentence of two others (Vijay Kumar and Gaurav Kumar). Another accused Nand Kishore was acquitted by a subordinate court.
Yadav has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 295A (intentional malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious belief), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) ) and convicted under 120B (criminal conspiracy).
Yadav was acquitted in the sacrilege case by a subordinate court in March 2021. After this, complainant Mohammad Ashraf had filed an appeal against his acquittal. Police had initially registered a case against Vijay, Gaurav and Kishore, but later AAP MLA Yadav was arrested in this case.
