The Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government on Thursday announced that it will deploy civil defense volunteers for four months to help fight the pollution crisis in the national capital. The announcement came after Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena directed the deployment of civil defense volunteers to help tackle air pollution in the city for four months from November 1, 2024. These civil defense volunteers were dismissed from their role as bus marshals by then Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in October 2023.

With Delhi’s air quality falling into the ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ categories, especially during winters, the initiative aims to tackle the ongoing pollution crisis in the city and protect public health. Apart from this temporary deployment, Saxena has asked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government and Chief Minister Atishi to develop a comprehensive long-term plan for future deployment of civil defense volunteers.
The Lieutenant Governor wrote on X that after considering the complex problem of livelihood of thousands of CDVs working as bus marshals, whose services were terminated a year ago on the orders of the then Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, today they have been given extension of service for the next 04 months. They got the opportunity to provide immediate relief by appointing them as volunteers to reduce the disaster of air pollution in Delhi. He further wrote that on humanitarian grounds requested Chief Minister Atishi to come up with a concrete plan for permanent appointment of these hapless CDVs as per law within the next 04 months.

Following the order, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal said the AAP government’s ongoing anti-pollution drive will be intensified and civil defense volunteers will be deployed to check violations and the entry of diesel buses will be banned in the national capital.
