The Delhi High Court has asked the government to file a status report on the Advocates Protection Bill aimed at protecting and ensuring a safe environment for legal professionals. Justice Sanjeev Narula directed to file the status report within two weeks and postponed the hearing from February 5, 2025 to December 16, 2024. The high court was hearing a plea by advocates Deepa Joseph and Alpha Firris Dayal seeking a law to protect advocates in the wake of the alleged murder of a lawyer in April.

The petition said that recent incidents of violence against lawyers show the dire need to implement the Advocates Protection Act in Delhi. It called for the court’s immediate intervention in the matter as the final draft bill of the Advocates Protection Act prepared by the Law Department of the Delhi government was pending for the consideration and approval of the Delhi Law Minister since September 13.
