Birth and education
Farooq Abdullah was born on 21 October 1937 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He went to England for his education, from where he completed his studies. Although he had no plans to come to India, he had to return due to the illness of his father Sheikh Abdullah. Farooq Abdullah returned to India in 1975 and took upon himself the responsibility of handling his father’s political legacy. Although during this time his British citizenship created a hindrance, but later on getting Indian citizenship, Abdullah started establishing his footing in politics.

Farooq Abdullah became MLA for the first time in the year 1982 and after this he remained MLA five more times. From 1982 to 1983, he also held the post of Health Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
Taking forward the political legacy of his father Sheikh Abdullah in Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah strengthened his hold in politics so much that he was elected the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir in the year 1983 and he remained the CM of Jammu and Kashmir thrice.
Then in the year 2009, Farooq Abdullah was elected to Rajya Sabha for the second time. This year i.e. 2009, he had won the Lok Sabha elections.
Farooq held the post of Minister of Renewable Energy in the Central Government from 31 May 2009 to May 2014. During this period he also remained the president of his party.
