Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced plans to extend the under-construction Mumbai Coastal Road to Virar in Palghar district, a part of Mumbai city. Once completed, this extension could reduce the travel time from Nariman Point to Virar by about 35-40 minutes. Fadnavis confirmed that Japan will provide Rs 54,000 crore for this ambitious expansion. Fadnavis said the Japanese government will provide Rs 54,000 crore for the extension of the coastal road up to Virar.

Program Development and Funding
Sharing an update on the tender process, Fadnavis said bidding on the link from Versova to Madh has already started and work on the link from Madh to Uttan will start soon. Ultimately, the coastal road will extend for 29.2 km along the western coast of Mumbai. It connects Marine Lines in the south to Kandivali in the north. The first phase of the project, covering a distance of 10.58 km from the Princess Street flyover to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, was inaugurated on March 11, 2024.

Originally launched in October 2018, the total project cost of the extended Mumbai coastal road is expected to be around Rs 12,721 crore. Virar from South Bombay to Palghar promises a 30-minute journey. Fadnavis emphasized that the completion of the extension of the Full Coastal Road will improve connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and benefit lakhs of commuters every day.
