Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (local time) highlighted the strong ties between India and Guyana and stressed the commonalities shared in culture, food and cricket. Addressing the Indian community in Georgetown, Guyana, he said cricket in particular serves as a deep bond. He said, “The love of cricket also strongly binds our countries. It is not just a game but a way of life, deeply ingrained in our national identity.” In a post on Twitter, Prime Minister Modi said, “Connecting through cricket! A pleasant interaction with leading cricket players of Guyana. The game has brought our countries closer and deepened our cultural ties.”
Prime Minister Modi also acknowledged the unique food traditions in the India-Guyanese community. “The Indo-Guyanese community also has a unique food tradition that has both Indian and Guyanese elements – I hear Dalpuri is popular here…”, he said, recognizing the cultural mix that has become a feature of the community. Reflecting on his personal visit, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude, saying, “…I thank President Ali for opening the doors of his home to me…With President Ali and his grandmother, we had a Planting a tree – this is part of our initiative – ‘A Tree in the Name’ was an emotional moment that I will always remember. I felt very honored to receive Guyana’s highest national award, the Order of Excellence.”

Additionally, he talked about India’s development and its global importance, saying, “The people of Guyana are well-wishers of India. You will be closely watching the progress being made in India… In just 10 years, India will be the 10th From the largest economy to the 5th largest economy, we will soon become the 3rd largest economy. Our youth have made us the 3rd largest start-up ecosystem in the world. We have reached Mars and the Moon. “

The Prime Minister emphasized that for the Indo-Guyanese community, Guyana is their “motherland” and ‘Bharat Mata’ is their “ancestral land”. Talking about India’s development he said that it is not only inspiring but also inclusive. It is pertinent to mention here that Prime Minister Modi arrived in Guyana on Wednesday, which is the first visit by an Indian head of state to the country in more than 50 years.
