Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind delegation held meeting with JPC on Waqf Amendment Bill, presented its recommendations

Sawant said that we have boycotted because the committee is not working in accordance with its principles and norms. Morally and ideologically they are wrong. Opposition MPs have decided to approach the Lok Sabha Speaker to discuss all their concerns regarding the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Bill.

A delegation of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind led by Chairman Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani held a meeting with the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on October 14 to present its views and suggestions on the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. The meeting was held in the Main Committee Room of the Parliament House. Those who attended the meeting included senior Supreme Court lawyer Rauf Rahim, retired IRS officer Akramul Jabbar Khan, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind general secretary Maulana Hakimuddin Qasmi, Jamiat Ulema-e Secretary Maulana Niaz Ahmed Farooqui. That he has boycotted the meeting because the committee is not working with principles.

What happened in the meeting?

During the meeting the delegation presented several major recommendations regarding the proposed amendments to the Waqf Bill. On this occasion, Rauf Rahim, on behalf of Jamiat, made a detailed analysis of the constitutional aspects of the bill.

Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024

Amid strong disapproval from opposition parties, Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha on August 8. NDA ally JD-U, TDP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena supported it. Bill. TDP MP Ganti Harish Madhur said his party would have no problem if the bill is sent to a parliamentary committee. Accepting the demand of allies and opposition parties, the government proposed to send this bill to the JPC for detailed discussion. The joint panel of both the Houses formed to discuss the Waqf (Amendment) Bill includes 31 MPs from various parties, including the opposition – 21 from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.
