PSA has been imposed on National Conference leader and former minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, former National Conference MLA Bashir Ahmed Veeri and maternal uncle of former Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti Sartaj Madani.
What is PSA: This act was enacted in 1978 in Jammu and Kashmir. Under this act, anyone can be detained without trial for two year.
Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah (National Conference leader) and Mehbooba Mufti (Peoples Democratic Party President) have been imposed with the Public Safety Act (PSA). After this action on Thursday, these two leaders can be kept in jail for three months without trial.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered against three more J&K leaders besides these two under stringent PSA. News agency ‘PTI’ report quoted officials as saying that the three leaders are NC leader and former minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, former MLA Bashir Ahmed Veeri and maternal uncle Sartaj Madani of former chief minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti.
Sources say that the separatist leaders who were detained on or around 5 August 2019, on the orders of the NDA government, completed the six-month period on Thursday. The Central goverment had few options on extending their custody. It is possible that for this reason PSA has been imposed on them.
Sources further said that some more detained leaders were released after signing the bond for not engaging in political activity, while at least 10 leaders are currently in custody or detained. . Among them are Omar’s father and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.
